Helping Students Make Responsible Decisions About AI
An interactive eLearning experience designed to help college students think critically about when and how to use generative AI.
Graduate Project | M.Ed. in Learning, Design & Technology, UNC Charlotte
The Design Challenge
Generative AI can be a powerful learning tool, but responsible use isn't always clear-cut. For this graduate project, I wanted to go beyond simply telling students what they should or shouldn't do and instead give them opportunities to think through realistic choices.
Design Decisions
-
REALISTIC SCENARIOS
I used situations that reflect how college students may actually encounter generative AI in their academic work. Rather than explaining what students should do, the scenarios give learners an opportunity to work through the decision themselves.
-
CHOICE + CONSEQUENCE
Learners see how their choices can affect their learning and academic responsibilities. Feedback explains the reasoning behind each outcome so that even an incorrect choice becomes part of the learning experience.
-
REFLECTION OVER MEMORIZATION
AI use isn't always a simple right-or-wrong decision. Instead of asking learners to memorize a list of rules, I designed activities that encourage them to consider the situation, purpose, and potential consequences before deciding how to use AI.
-
KEEP IT RELEVANT
I kept the content focused on decisions students could realistically face rather than trying to cover everything about generative AI. This helped keep the experience practical, focused, and immediately applicable.
The Solution
I created an interactive eLearning experience that moves learners from understanding responsible AI use to applying that thinking in realistic situations. The experience builds progressively, giving learners the context they need before asking them to make decisions and reflect on them.
UNDERSTAND
Build the foundation
Learners explore key considerations for ethical and responsible AI use before applying them.
CONSIDER
Look beyond the obvious
Learners examine the context, purpose, and potential impact of using AI rather than treating every situation the same.
DECIDE
Apply the thinking
Realistic scenarios ask learners to weigh their options and decide whether AI should or shouldn't be used.
Make it personal
Learners consider how the ideas and decisions from the experience connect to how they use generative AI.
