Building Consulting Skills That Change How L&D Solves Problems

Helping instructional designers diagnose performance problems and recommend the right solutions.

The Challenge

Instructional designers were increasingly joining business conversations earlier, but many had never received formal training on how to consult.

The challenge wasn't teaching them how to design training. It was helping them determine when training was and wasn't the right answer.

The Research

Before designing anything, I surveyed instructional designers, Knowledge Management professionals, and leaders to understand where they felt confident and where they needed support.

Design Decisions

  • 15 MINUTES

    Keep It Short

I created two focused, 15-minute eLearnings instead of one long course so learners could build skills in manageable steps without unnecessary content or added cognitive load.

  • APPLICATION

    Build From Mindset to Practice

The first module establishes the consultant mindset. The second moves learners into realistic situations where they diagnose problems and make recommendations.

  • REAL WORK

    Make It Relevant

Scenarios reflect the types of requests and conversations instructional designers encounter at work, giving learners practice making decisions they could apply on the job.

The Solution

I designed a blended learning approach that moved learners from understanding the consultant mindset to diagnosing real performance problems. For this project, I developed two short eLearning experiences that build on one another.

The broader design called for instructor-led practice and performance support to help learners apply these skills during real stakeholder conversations. These components were part of my proposed solution but were not developed for this project.
